SMC Drivers take home hardware!

***for immediate release***

We all know 2024 was a great year for the Sprite-Midget Challenge: We held three SMC races in two states and two countries, raced hard and competitively, raced safe, and had fun. Three of our drivers traveled 2000+ miles to race at Road America. And at the 2025 SOVREN Annual General Meeting (AGM, aka awards banquet), SMC drivers also picked up some nice hardware.

SOVREN’s Group 1 awards were swept by SMC drivers: Loren Campbell, Rich Newman, and Rod Duncan took places 1, 2, and 3 overall for the season. Additionally, SMC drivers took six out of the top seven positions in the final points standings!

Rod, Loren, and Rich swept the Group 1 awards for 2024.

Loren Campbell was honored to receive the SOVREN Wade Carter Sportsmanship award, “honoring members who have displayed outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the track”, presented to him by…yep, Greg Heacock, another SMC driver.

Owen Duncan, future SMC driver and son of current driver Rod Duncan, was recognized for his enthusiastic and tireless efforts to keep our cars on the track with the SOVREN Eddie Vanetti Jr. award, which goes annually to “that special volunteer crew member who works behind the scenes to enable the race cars to be out on the track”. Owen epitomizes this award, which was presented by 2023 recipient Devon Newby, that’s right, another tireless helper in the SMC paddock (and racer of a 1980 Rabbit).

To wrap up the evening, SMC drivers presented signed 2024 SMC season posters to each and every SOVREN volunteer at the meeting. We appreciate you and couldn’t race without you!!

It was a blockbuster night for our group in the spectacular Main Hall and the LeMay Automotive Museum in Tacoma, Washington. Now we turn our sights to the 2025 season!
