2025 SMC Race 1- Spokane

Sprite Midget Challenge

2025 Race 1, Spokane/Qlispé Raceway Park

The International Sprite-Midget Challenge kicked off the 2025 season helping SOVREN celebrate its long-awaited return to Spokane, hosted by the Kalispell tribe at the Qlispé Raceway Park as part of the Spokane Festival of Speed.

Though border-crossing issues, a mechanical, and other things affected turnout, the five-car field put on a great show of tight, action-packed racing for the spectators, including many from the on-site car show.

The starting order of Newby, Campbell, Herb, Newman, and Heacock setup the ensuing racing action. Toward the end of the first lap, it was Newby, Campbell, and Herb racing tight, with Newman and Heacock doing the same. An outside to inside move by Campbell, driving one of Newby’s cars for the weekend, at turn 9 was enough to sneak past Newby and he made it stick as the field completed the first lap.

Newby continued to press for the lead for several laps, but ultimately succumbed to one of racing’s lesser-known rules: Never let an inferior driver borrow your faster car to race against you. The rest of the field finished in starting order: Herb, Newman, Heacock.

The trophy antics begin after the race.
