Welcome to the home of the West Coast Sprite-Midget Challenge race series.

The goal of the Sprite-Midget Challenge group is to bring together drivers and enthusiasts of Austin Healey Sprites and MG Midgets to further the sport of vintage racing.

Sprites and Midgets were created by Austin Healey and MG as “Everyman Sports Cars”, beginning 65 years ago with the Mark 1 “Bugeye” Sprite. They were affordable and instant classics on the road and track, and are still fun and affordable race cars, for novices and seasoned drivers alike.

We launched the Sprite-Midget Challenge race in 2019 as a place where these cars and their drivers can compete in a low stress, high enjoyment event. The Sprite-Midget group is more about a family-like atmosphere and teamwork than individual efforts and finishing first (though we most certainly compete). Each event has seen more than one car being worked on by the entire paddock; drivers and crews: Our goal is to get every car on the track for every race. Spare parts, knowledge, and elbow grease are shared as readily as food and drink (and the occasional tall tale). A potluck dinner is usually shared on Saturday evening.

The Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts, SOVREN, has given us the stage on which we play. To date the Sprite-Midget Challenge race has taken place during a full weekend of vintage racing, so we have the Challenge race all to ourselves, and also get to compete in the rest of the class events for the weekend.

Historically, the race has been held at the Columbia River Classic in Portland, Oregon, in September. This event is held in conjunction with the annual Portland-area All British Field Meet.

We’ve had so much fun that one race a year was simply not enough, so we expanded the Sprite-Midget Challenge to a series of three races for 2023, and are continuing that in 2024.

For 2024, the races take place at:

  1. The Pacific Northwest Historics event, June 28-30 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington.
  2. The British Columbia Historic Motor Races, August 10-11 at Mission Raceway Park in Mission, BC.
  3. The Columbia River Classic , August 31-September 1 at Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon.

Fans and drivers alike, come join us for a warm, friendly welcome and see what all the excitement is all about.
